POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) educator to join our education team. In this role, you will collaborate closely with our Director of STEM Education to further the mission of the Atlas Science Center. Through your teaching, you’ll offer educational and engaging experiences to Atlas guests of all ages. Each day in this position promises new and exciting challenges. Most of your working hours will fall between 11:00am and 5:00pm Thursday-Saturday though there will be field trips that require roughly 2-3 hour shifts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You will not exceed 10-12 hours per week.

STEM is about lifelong learning. Our team does not expect you to know everything when you begin. We have high expectations though of being passionate about learning and dedicated to the quality of the teaching you offer our guests. 

MAIN DUTIES

  • To honor and uphold Atlas Science Center’s mission statement and policies.

  • Science Live! Stage: Each month Atlas educators present a new Science Live! Stage Show. Educators are expected to learn and present these shows as they are one of the pivotal parts of the Atlas guest experience. Educators will also be expected to interact with the audience confidently and professionally, answering questions when they can and engaging in thoughtful discussion.

  • Paper Science Lab: After training, independently lead the groups up to 25 through the Paper Science Lab. You will guide guests through the handmade paper experience while explaining the science and artistry of paper. Each month the education team incorporates new twists on papermaking. You will be responsible for learning additional techniques and teaching them as required.

  • Front Desk: Rotate through front desk responsibilities, including answering phones, processing sales in the gift shop, facilitating guest check-ins, selling membership passes, and providing information on our programming.

  • Field Trips: Assist in leading groups of 15-90 students along with teachers and chaperones through selected STEM activities during field trips. Field trip duties include setup and cleanup.

  • Cleaning, Setup, and Organization: Maintain cleanliness and tidiness in educational areas, including exhibits, the paper lab, the stage, classroom, and self-guided activity areas. Collaborate with fellow educators in setting up for field trips and outreach events.

  • Exhibit Floor: Interact with guests, offering insightful commentary on our exhibits and the rich history of the Atlas Mill. Additionally, contribute to exhibit and activity table setup, takedown, cleaning and maintenance.

RELEVANT SKILLS

  • Exceptional verbal communication skills both amongst the Atlas staff and when engaging our guests.

  • A team attitude. The Atlas staff is small and we work as a team toward our mission every day. This requires focus and efficiency from every teammate during all work hours.

  • A passion for learning and reading, especially topics related to for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and manufacturing.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Powerpoint.

  • Enjoy interacting with guests, performing for an audience, leading discussions and responding to inquiries.

  • Capable of meeting the physical demands of the job. This includes including walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50+ lbs. Ability to teach at least 2 Science Live! Stage Shows or Paper Science Labs (each about 30 minutes) with short breaks in between.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates must be able to provide references and pass a criminal background check.

  • Qualified candidates will be asked to a second interview to give a STEM-related talk on the topic of their choosing.
